FREQUENCY OF TESTING

The Code of Practice suggests testing frequencies based upon both the type of equipment, the class of equipment and the locations or type of business in which the equipment is used.

They have based their frequencies upon factors such as Environment, Users, Equipment construction and Equipment Type.

TESTING PROCEDURES

In-Service testing involves:

1. Preliminary visual inspection.

2. Earth continuity tests (Class 1 equipment)

3. Insulation tests (Sometimes substituted by touch current measurement.)

4. Functional Checks.

Visual inspections

Formal visual inspections should only be carried out by persons competent to do so. The results of the inspection must be recorded.

When checking an item the following will be considered:

1. Suitability of the equipment for the use it is put to and its environment.
2. Strain on leads and connections.
3. Cables located so as to prevent damage.
4. Easy access to on/off switch at socket.
5. The flexible cable.
6. Use of extension cables.
7. Detachable power cables have an earth.
8. Signs of overheating.
9. Correct size of fuse.
10. Plug cover properly secured.
11. Cracks or other damage to equipment, leads and plugs.

THE ELECTRICAL TESTING PROCEDURE SHOULD ONLY EVER TAKE PLACE AFTER THE TESTER IS SATISFIED THAT THE APPLIANCE HAS SUCCESSFULLY PASSED THE VISUAL INSPECTION.
