TYPES OF EQUIPMENT

We use the term portable appliance testing but it is not only your ‘Portable’ equipment that is required to be tested. In fact it is any piece of equipment with a plug on it.

The reason why PAT testing is carried out is to reduce to an acceptable level the risk of danger from electrical shock and fire caused by faulty appliances.

It is generally agreed that you have the same risk of an electrical shock if a piece of equipment is movable or portable.

The IEE code of practice gives guidance on the various equipment types and suggests how often the tests and re-inspections should be carried out according to the type of business they are used in.
